What is an Education Loan EMI Calculator?
An education loan can accrue interest before regular EMI repayment begins. That makes a standard EMI calculator incomplete: the amount on which EMI is eventually calculated may be larger than the original amount borrowed.
This tool models the course period plus moratorium and lets you compare servicing the interest during that period with allowing interest to accumulate. Bank policies and concessions differ, so use your sanction terms for the final calculation.
Education-loan moratorium model
If you choose to service interest during the study/moratorium period, the regular repayment principal remains the original loan amount and the pre-repayment interest is shown separately.
Moratorium does not necessarily mean interest-free
The key decision variable is what happens to interest before EMI starts. A repayment holiday can still allow interest to accrue, which increases the balance that later has to be amortised.
Frequently asked questions
Is education-loan interest rate fixed by RBI?
No. RBI has deregulated lending rates; banks determine education-loan rates subject to the applicable regulatory framework.
Does every lender capitalise moratorium interest the same way?
No. Use the calculator as a planning model and verify the exact treatment, concessions and moratorium definition in your sanction terms.
Should I service interest during the course?
The calculator shows the cost difference; whether servicing it is appropriate depends on cash flow and lender terms.
