First isolate the repayment period
A normal EMI comparison assumes repayment begins immediately. An education loan may not work that way: there can be a course period and moratorium before regular EMI begins. If interest is not serviced during that period, the principal at repayment start can be higher than the amount originally borrowed.
The table below therefore starts with a simple repayment-only comparison at 10.5% p.a., before adding moratorium effects.
| Loan | 5 years | 10 years | 15 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10 lakh | ~₹21,494/month | ~₹13,493/month | ~₹11,054/month |
| ₹20 lakh | ~₹42,988/month | ~₹26,986/month | ~₹22,108/month |
| ₹30 lakh | ~₹64,482/month | ~₹40,479/month | ~₹33,162/month |
A longer tenure lowers EMI but increases total interest. That trade-off matters more than the headline monthly number.
Moratorium can change the starting balance
Suppose ₹20 lakh is outstanding for 36 months before regular repayment and interest is allowed to accrue. Under a monthly-compounding planning model at 10.5%, the balance at repayment start would be materially above ₹20 lakh. If interest is serviced during the course instead, the regular EMI can begin on a lower principal.
Actual lender policies differ, so the calculator deliberately exposes that choice rather than assuming all education loans capitalise interest in the same way.
Compare total cost, not just EMI
A 15-year repayment can look easier each month than a 5-year repayment, but the borrower pays interest for three times as long. When comparing offers, look at:
- EMI after moratorium,
- interest accumulated before EMI begins,
- principal at repayment start,
- total repayment,
- processing fees or insurance if applicable.
Rate sensitivity matters too
Education-loan interest rates are lender-determined rather than fixed by RBI. A 1–2 percentage-point difference can materially change the lifetime cost, especially on a ₹20–30 lakh balance over 10–15 years.
Frequently asked questions
Is an education-loan moratorium interest-free?
Not necessarily. A moratorium can postpone regular repayment while interest still accrues. Check the sanction terms.
Does RBI set one education-loan interest rate?
No. RBI states that banks determine education-loan interest rates subject to the applicable lending-rate framework.
Should I always choose the longest tenure?
No. A longer tenure may improve monthly cash flow but usually increases total interest.
Can I model interest servicing during study?
Yes. The calculator has separate serviced and unserviced modes for the pre-repayment period.
