Understand the calculation

What is a Capital Gains Tax Calculator?

Capital-gains tax is not one universal rate. The holding-period rule and tax treatment depend on the asset. This calculator handles common cases using the current rules reviewed on the date shown and exposes the slab-rate assumption where personal-rate taxation is required.

It deliberately does not attempt every exemption, rollover, grandfathering adjustment, surcharge, foreign asset rule or special transaction. Where your case depends on those provisions, use the result only as a first estimate.

Gain, classification and tax estimate

Gain = sale consideration − purchase consideration; the asset type and holding period determine the classification and applicable rate.

For listed equity/equity-oriented funds, the calculator applies the current 20% qualifying STCG rate and 12.5% qualifying LTCG rate with the ₹1.25 lakh annual LTCG threshold. Other short-term/slab-rate cases use the editable marginal-rate assumption.

Why this calculator asks for your slab rate

Several short-term or deemed-short-term gains are taxed at the taxpayer’s applicable rate rather than one universal capital-gains percentage. The calculator therefore makes that personal-rate assumption explicit instead of silently guessing it.

Frequently asked questions

Does this replace tax filing software or professional advice?

No. It is a simplified estimate for common cases.

Does the ₹1.25 lakh exemption apply to every LTCG asset?

No. The calculator applies that threshold only to the qualifying listed-equity/equity-fund path modelled here.

Why might property tax differ from this estimate?

Cost adjustments, exemptions, transaction expenses, stamp-value provisions and special facts can materially change property gains.
